Munich, December 12 – Two tracks at Munich Central Station were closed for several hours yesterday evening following an incident where a trailer overturned onto the railway lines. The accident, involving an electric transport vehicle, occurred on Thursday, December 11th, at approximately 7:15 PM.
Electric Vehicle Trailer Overturns Between Platforms 5 and 6
According to federal police reports, the trailer of an electric transport vehicle tipped over into the track area between platforms 5 and 6. The vehicle was being operated by a 62-year-old Deutsche Bahn employee who was attempting to turn on the platform at the time of the incident.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Deutsche Bahn confirmed that the affected track was immediately closed following the accident. Federal police officers were dispatched to the scene to document the incident, and the Munich Technical Relief Organization (THW) was called in to assist with the recovery of the overturned trailer.
Overhead Line Deactivated for Recovery Operations
To facilitate the recovery work in the track area, the overhead line had to be switched off and grounded by Deutsche Bahn’s emergency manager. Consequently, track 6 was also closed to ensure safety during the operation. The track closures were lifted around 10:00 PM after the recovery measures were successfully completed.
The driver of the electric vehicle was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and remained unharmed. Preliminary estimates from the federal police indicate that the material damage amounts to several hundred euros.
Impact on Rail Traffic and Future Measures
While the immediate impact on rail traffic was limited to the two affected tracks, the incident highlights the importance of operational safety within busy railway hubs. Deutsche Bahn has not yet released a statement regarding potential internal investigations or measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The federal police are continuing their assessment of the exact cause of the trailer overturning.
The incident at Munich Central Station underscores the complex logistics and safety protocols required to manage railway operations, especially in high-traffic areas. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
