Hamburg, December 24, 2025 – Official planning has begun for the western extension of the U5 subway line to Lurup and Osdorf, marking a significant step towards providing direct subway access for tens of thousands of residents in Hamburg’s western outskirts. The U5 extension is projected to be completed by 2040, promising significantly shorter travel times to the city center and frequent service.

Detailed Planning and Public Involvement Underway

Following an approved examination mandate, Hochbahn has initiated detailed planning for the extension. The current proposals include one station in Lurup and one in Osdorfer Born, along with several route options and station designs. Initial findings are anticipated by spring 2026, with preliminary planning scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

In parallel, a public participation process will launch in early 2026 across both districts. This initiative aims to involve local residents in the planning, ensuring their input helps shape the final design of the extension.

Political Support for the U5 Extension

Selina Storm and Filiz Demirel (Greens), constituency representatives for Altona West, emphasized the importance of this development. “The extension of the U5 to Lurup and Osdorf sends a strong signal to the people in western Hamburg. For decades, local residents have advocated for a rapid transit connection – now we are taking concrete steps to make the vision of a connected Lurup and Osdorf a reality,” they stated.

They further stressed the importance of central, easily accessible station locations and transparent planning conducted in collaboration with residents, highlighting that the U5 will significantly improve daily life and connectivity for Altona-West.

U5: A 25-Kilometer Connection Across Hamburg

The U5 line, as initially planned, will span approximately 25 kilometers, connecting Bramfeld in the east, through the city center, to the arenas in the west. The newly planned extension to Lurup and Osdorfer Born will add another four kilometers and two new stations, bringing the total number of new stations along the U5 to 24.

Specific Route Considerations for Lurup and Osdorf

In Lurup, planners are primarily evaluating an east-west alignment for the station. For Osdorfer Born, in addition to a straight continuation of the line, a curved variant is also being considered, which would place a station under Bornheide in the vicinity of the Born Center.

This ambitious project is set to transform public transport in Hamburg, offering enhanced connectivity and convenience for a large segment of the city’s population.
