UKE Bribery Allegations: Investigations Started Three Years Ago
Hamburg, January 10 – New details have surfaced concerning the bribery allegations involving a subsidiary of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The public prosecutor’s office has confirmed that initial investigations into the matter were launched more than three years ago.
Reports indicate that the public prosecutor’s office received anonymous tips approximately three years ago. However, some of these tips were deemed not legally relevant, and despite extensive investigations, the suspicions could not be substantiated at the time, according to a spokesperson for the authority.
Hamburg Interior Ministry Active in 2022
This confirmation by the public prosecutor’s office supports a report by the “Hamburger Abendblatt.” The “Dezernat Interne Ermittlungen” (Department of Internal Investigations) of the Hamburg Interior Ministry also initiated activities in 2022, but similarly without conclusive results.
Suspicions of Bribery and Corruption
The investigations gained momentum only when UKE itself presented concrete evidence and filed a criminal complaint last autumn. The allegations involve suspected bribery and corruption within UKE’s subsidiary, Klinik Facility Management Eppendorf (KFE).
KFE is responsible, among other things, for the construction of new clinic buildings. In mid-December, the public prosecutor’s office conducted searches of premises. Around the same time, UKE publicly disclosed the case.
The suspects are accused of bribery and being bribed. The patient care at UKE is reportedly not affected by these allegations.
UKE Expects Millions in Losses for This Year
Separately, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) anticipates a loss of approximately 70 million euros for 2025. The institution is seeking additional financial support from the city.
