University of Hamburg Data Center Requires Extensive Renovation Due to Structural Damage
Hamburg, May 30 – The Regional Computing Center of the University of Hamburg is facing extensive renovation due to significant structural damage and the presence of contaminants. These issues were discovered during ongoing inspections of the building, which has stood between Rothenbaumchaussee and Schlüterstraße since the mid-1960s.
The university confirmed to NDR that not only has damage to the building’s fabric been identified, but also hazardous substances. The institution is currently searching for companies with the necessary expertise to structurally secure the listed building.
Concrete Renewal Essential for Structural Integrity
The load-bearing facade requires the removal and renewal of its concrete. Until this work is completed, the structural integrity of the building is compromised, according to the tender. Therefore, a supporting steel structure is planned to stabilize the walls.
The exact impact of the renovation work on the data center’s operations is not yet clear. This news comes at a challenging time for the university, which is already facing budget constraints across all departments.
A spokesperson for the President stated that discussions are underway with the relevant authorities regarding financing and scheduling. The university aims to preserve the building in the long term.
