Hamburg, Germany – An urgent appeal has been issued for blood donations in Hamburg, particularly for blood types O+ and O-, as supplies have reached a critical level this December. The German Red Cross (DRK) has reported a significant drop in the availability of these crucial blood groups, emphasizing the vital role of donations in saving lives.
Why are O+ and O- Blood Types Critically Needed?
According to the DRK, the current stock of O+ and O- blood types has fallen to just 40% of the required level. While 35% of people in Germany have O+ blood, only 6% possess the O- type, making it particularly scarce. O- blood is considered a ‘universal donor’ and is essential for emergency transfusions when a patient’s blood type is unknown.
Every day, approximately 14,000 blood donations are needed across Germany to treat accident victims, cancer patients, and individuals undergoing surgery or suffering from immune deficiencies. Each donation offers a chance at survival for those in critical condition.

Who Can Donate Blood?
