Vigil in Hamburg-Wandsbek for Cyclist Killed in Traffic Accident
Hamburg, July 6 – Approximately 20 individuals convened on Saturday afternoon in Hamburg-Wandsbek for a vigil dedicated to a cyclist who tragically lost his life. The man was struck by two vehicles while crossing the roadway at the end of June. The vigil, held on Ölmühlenweg, was organized by the Hamburg regional chapter of the German Cyclist’s Association (ADFC).
Fatal Accident on June 24
The 57-year-old cyclist was hit and run over by two vehicles on June 24 on Ölmühlenweg. According to police reports, the man was riding on the bike path and intended to cross the road when he collided with a car driven by a 56-year-old woman and a van driven by a 64-year-old man. The cyclist succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene of the accident.
ADFC Criticizes Senate’s Indifference
Thomas Lütke, an ADFC board member, used the incident to reiterate his criticism of the Hamburg Senate. “The protection of human lives must finally be given the highest priority in transport policy,” he stated in a press release. He described the Senate’s indifference to deaths on Hamburg’s streets as “scandalous.”
Call for a Roundtable Discussion
The ADFC has long advocated for safer cycle paths, effective speed limits, and increased speed controls in road traffic. “Hamburg urgently needs a ‘Vision Zero’ master plan,” Lütke emphasized. “We once again call on the Senate to convene a roundtable with all stakeholders to develop an immediate program for greater safety for all road users, especially unprotected pedestrians and cyclists.”
In the first half of the year, three people, including an eleven-year-old child, have already died in cycling accidents. Last year, a total of eleven cyclists were killed.
