Munich, September 19 – The 191st Munich Oktoberfest has officially commenced, with an estimated 600 police officers from the Wiesn-Wache deployed to ensure the safety and peaceful celebration for millions of attendees on the Theresienwiese. This year’s security concept has been significantly revised following last year’s temporary closure of the festival grounds due to overcrowding.
Revised Security Concept for Oktoberfest 2026
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann personally inspected the updated security measures on Saturday. According to the Ministry, the city of Munich, in collaboration with the Bavarian Police and other relevant authorities, has thoroughly overhauled the security strategy. “We have drawn the necessary conclusions from last year’s events,” Herrmann stated.
Key enhancements to the security framework include:
- Increased Surveillance: The city of Munich has installed 35 camera locations with over 50 cameras across the Wiesn grounds. Recordings are continuously monitored by Wiesn-Wache officers during opening hours.
- AI-Powered Crowd Monitoring: For the first time, a “Heatmap” and Artificial Intelligence will be used to visualize the current crowd density on the festival grounds. This technology aims to better observe pedestrian traffic and dwell times.
- Professional Crowdspotters: A dedicated “Crowdspotter” will be on-site to quickly identify potential dangers and overcrowding situations.
- Multilingual Announcements: A multilingual moderator will provide loudspeaker announcements to ensure effective communication with the diverse international audience.
- Enhanced Coordination Center: A modernly equipped room for the coordination committee has been established at the service center on the Theresienwiese. This committee includes representatives from event management, medical and security services, Munich Police, and the Munich Transport Company.
Herrmann emphasized that there are currently no concrete indications of threats or disturbances.
Advanced Technology and International Cooperation
The 56 cameras operated by the Munich Police on the Wiesn grounds offer high-resolution image quality, which, according to Herrmann, allows for better identification of offenders even in darkness. This year also marks the first time the Munich Police will receive support from the Drone Competence and Defense Center (DKAZ) of the Bavarian Police.
“Our drone experts are on-site with specialized technical equipment and concentrated expertise. This enables our emergency forces to react as quickly as possible to potential dangers posed by drones,” Herrmann highlighted.
Furthermore, a public prosecutor’s on-call service, responsible for the Wiesn, is stationed at the police headquarters in the city center. Bavarian riot police are also deployed, supported by uniformed police officers from Italy and plainclothes pickpocket investigators from across Germany and other European countries.
Herrmann extended his gratitude to all those working tirelessly for the police, rescue services, fire department, and judiciary during the Oktoberfest. He attributed the safety of visitors to their unwavering commitment.
