Hamburg, March 23 – A bicycle with a child in a trailer was stolen in Hamburg-Stellingen on Friday, leading to a large-scale police operation. The incident, first reported by the “Hamburger Morgenpost,” occurred when parents left their four-year-old daughter, who had fallen asleep in the bike trailer, unattended outside a store in Stellinger Höfe on Kieler Straße while they went shopping.
Stolen Bicycle Recovered via AirTag
Upon realizing the bicycle and trailer were missing, the parents immediately alerted the police. A massive search operation was launched, involving numerous patrol cars, police motorcycles, and a police helicopter. The stolen bicycle was eventually located a few hundred meters away, outside a hardware store on Kieler Straße, thanks to an AirTag, a small tracking device, attached to the bike. The four-year-old child was still asleep in the trailer, unharmed.
Apprehension of the Suspect
Shortly after the discovery, a 58-year-old woman was arrested inside the hardware store. According to the police, the woman appeared to be psychologically disturbed and was reportedly intoxicated. Authorities have stated that there is no indication that the woman targeted the child; her intention was apparently to steal the bicycle, and she likely did not notice the sleeping child in the trailer.
Police Investigation Underway
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident. The quick thinking of the parents in using an AirTag proved crucial in the swift recovery of the bicycle and the child. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and the potential risks of leaving children unattended, even for brief periods.
Community Reaction and Safety Concerns
The event has sparked concern within the Hamburg community regarding child safety and property theft. Local residents have expressed shock and relief that the child was found safe. Authorities continue to remind the public to remain cautious and to report any suspicious activities immediately.
