Young Union Advocates for Intergenerational Fairness in Budget Savings
Berlin, June 7, 2026 – Johannes Winkel, federal chairman of the Young Union (JU), the youth organization of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has urged the federal government to implement a smaller pension increase than initially planned. This proposal seeks to generate financial resources to support the BAföG student loan program, which CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn has questioned, and to prevent potential cuts to parental benefits.
In an interview with “Bild am Sonntag,” Winkel stated, “The increases in pensions, BAföG, and parental benefits were all agreed upon in the coalition agreement. It is understandable that these promises are being reviewed in times of tight budgets. However, it is not understandable why savings are not distributed fairly.” He criticized that while the planned 4.2 percent pension increase remains untouched, the BAföG increase might be entirely scrapped, and parental benefits are not only at risk of not being increased but even cut. Winkel emphasized that a “just” approach would consider budget savings as a “task for all generations.”
Specific Proposal: 3% Pension Increase to Free Up €5 Billion
Winkel’s concrete proposal to the coalition leaders is to increase pensions by three percent. He argues that this percentage would still be above the inflation rate, ensuring that every pensioner gains purchasing power. This more modest increase would create financial leeway of approximately five billion euros. These funds, he suggests, could then be utilized to implement the “important adjustment of the housing cost allowance for BAföG” and to ensure that parental benefits are not reduced. Winkel’s appeal to the government was clear: “Pull yourselves together for the young generation, dear government.”
