Berlin, June 17, 2026 – Professor Gwendolyn Sasse, the esteemed Director of the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) and an Einstein Professor, has been formally elected as an Ordinary Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The announcement was made following the Academy’s meeting on Leibniz Day, June 13, 2026, where 10 distinguished researchers were welcomed into its ranks.
Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Research
The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, a revered institution with a 325-year history dating back to the Prussian Academy of Sciences, selects its members based on outstanding academic achievement. Professor Sasse’s election into the Political Science category underscores her significant contributions to the field.
Expressing her gratitude, Professor Sasse stated, “I am greatly honoured to be awarded membership of the Academy. This will spur me on in my further work at ZOiS, at Humboldt-Universität and in the Academy’s formats.”
Theoria cum praxi: Bridging Theory and Practice
Professor Sasse emphasized the Academy’s commitment to the principle of ‘Theoria cum praxi’ – theory with practice – a philosophy championed by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. This principle highlights the importance of integrating academic research with societal responsibility, a tenet that resonates deeply with Professor Sasse’s own approach to her work.
“I am especially pleased because as well as producing outstanding research, the Academy follows Leibniz’s own principle of Theoria cum praxi – theory with practice – and emphasises academia’s responsibility towards society. This aligns with my own understanding of my role as a researcher,” she added.
Research as a Social Responsibility
Today, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities focuses its activities on humanities research, interdisciplinary studies, and fostering dialogue between the scientific community and society at large. Its research portfolio includes a diverse array of externally funded projects, and its members actively contribute to social and political discourse through various interdisciplinary working groups.
The election of Professor Sasse is a testament to her dedication to rigorous academic inquiry and her commitment to ensuring that research serves a broader societal purpose. Her role within the Academy is expected to further strengthen the institution’s mission and impact.
The Academy’s membership comprises Ordinary and Extraordinary Members elected from all disciplines, with Ordinary Members expected to play an active and engaged role in its initiatives.
