Munich Startups Among Europe’s Top 100 Rising Companies at VivaTech

Munich, March 20, 2026 – Several Munich-based companies have secured prominent positions in the second edition of VivaTech’s ‘Top 100 Rising European Startups’ ranking. The report, released by one of Europe’s largest startup and technology events, VivaTech, shines a spotlight on the continent’s most dynamic tech enterprises, with Munich particularly excelling in the Defence and Space sectors.

The ranking features 100 selected startups from twelve countries, with Germany, alongside the UK and France, emerging as a leading startup nation, boasting 23 represented companies. This year’s selection underscores a growing specialization within Europe’s tech ecosystem, with strong emphasis on sectors such as specialized AI, Fintech, Cybersecurity, Healthtech, Legaltech, and marketplace/e-commerce models. Concurrently, themes of technological sovereignty and industrial competitiveness are gaining significant traction.

François Bitouzet, Managing Director of VivaTech, commented on the overarching theme: “This year, technological sovereignty is a recurring theme throughout the Top 100, particularly evident in the areas of cybersecurity and defense technology. The rise of Mistral AI in competition with American giants is one of the most visible examples of this. This development reflects a strategic turning point where Europe is investing massively to achieve leadership and sovereignty in key technologies.”

Munich’s Diverse Tech Landscape: From AI to Space

The Munich startup scene demonstrates its broad capabilities within the ranking. In the ‘AI Productivity and Automation’ category, Lio Software stands out for developing agentic AI for corporate procurement, automating processes like bid comparisons and supplier analyses. The startup recently concluded a Series A funding round, securing 25.7 million Euros.

The Defence sector sees several Munich companies making their mark:

  • Arx Robotics is developing autonomous ground systems for military applications, already deployed in European armies.
  • Helsing positions itself as a defense company providing AI-based solutions, and has expanded its offerings to include drones, aircraft, and underwater drones.
  • Quantum Systems combines hardware, AI, and software for drone and reconnaissance systems, serving both military and civilian purposes.

Education and New Space: Key Growth Drivers

Beyond Deeptech and Defence, HR-Tech also features in the ranking. Simpleclub offers digital learning content for students and apprentices, covering a wide range of professional fields.

In the Spacetech sector, two Munich startups are representing European space innovation:

  • Isar Aerospace is developing launch vehicles for satellites.
  • The Exploration Company focuses on reusable spacecraft to make transport missions more cost-effective.

The selection process for the startups involved collaboration with international investors such as Accel, Eurazeo, HV Capital, Northzone, and Partech. Key criteria for inclusion included a European headquarters, an annual turnover of at least five million Euros in 2025, and a growth rate of at least 40 percent over the past three years.

This recognition highlights Munich’s growing importance as a hub for innovation and technology, with its startups actively shaping the future of various critical industries across Europe.
