Neukölln Waste Task Force to Expand Operations Amidst Success in Combating Illegal Dumping
Berlin, April 15, 2026 – The Neukölln district in Berlin is poised to significantly escalate its fight against illegal waste dumping by expanding its dedicated special task force, known as “Soko Müll.” This strategic decision was announced following a recent meeting between Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and the unit’s staff, highlighting the city’s commitment to maintaining urban cleanliness and deterring environmental infractions.
The “Soko Müll” unit, established within the Public Order Office, has been instrumental in tackling the pervasive issue of illegally discarded waste, ranging from household items like sofa sets and refrigerators to large quantities of construction debris. Thomas Kolb, a key figure in the unit’s establishment, confirmed that the team, currently comprising three positions, will be augmented with five additional staff members, initially on a temporary basis. This expansion aims to enhance the task force’s operational capacity and extend its reach across the district.
Increased Presence and Deterrence
The operational strategy of “Soko Müll” involves proactive surveillance and investigation, often focusing on identified “litter hotspots” where illegal dumping is a recurring problem. Two of the three existing officers are actively engaged in field operations, including night shifts, to catch offenders red-handed and gather evidence. This hands-on approach has proven effective in identifying those responsible for environmental violations.
Last year alone, the task force successfully identified 67 offenders, resulting in fines totaling more than 92,900 euros. This translates to an average fine of approximately 1,390 euros per case, underscoring the financial deterrent imposed on those who flout waste disposal regulations. In severe instances, particularly involving the illegal disposal of commercial construction debris, fines can even reach five-figure sums.
Gerrit Kringel, Neukölln District Councilor, expressed optimism regarding the expansion, stating that the district office has observed clear progress. “The number of trash hotspots has decreased noticeably in recent years,” said Kolb, a sentiment echoed by Kringel, who hopes the increased presence will serve as an even greater deterrent than before.
A Broader Commitment to City Cleanliness
The expansion of the “Soko Müll” task force is part of a broader initiative by the city of Berlin to enhance urban cleanliness and quality of life for its residents. Illegal dumping not only detracts from the aesthetic appeal of the city but also poses environmental and public health risks. By strengthening enforcement and increasing the likelihood of apprehension, Neukölln aims to foster a greater sense of responsibility among its inhabitants and businesses regarding waste management.
This move is particularly relevant as cities globally grapple with the challenges of waste management in urban environments. The success of “Soko Müll” in Neukölln could serve as a model for other districts within Berlin and potentially for other municipalities facing similar issues. The focus on both deterrence through fines and active investigation highlights a comprehensive approach to tackling illegal waste disposal.
The “Soko Müll” initiative underscores the importance of dedicated resources and political will in addressing environmental concerns at the local level. With additional staff, the task force is expected to further reduce illegal dumping incidents, contributing to a cleaner and more pleasant urban landscape for all residents of Neukölln.
