Berlin, April 23, 2026 – Berlin police have seized over 400 canisters of nitrous oxide, as authorities enforce a new ban on the substance for minors. The confiscation of 473 canisters took place in Berlin-Spandau, as confirmed by police, who also released a photograph showcasing the large quantity of seized containers.

Nitrous Oxide Ban for Minors Now Active

The new regulation, which came into effect on April 12th, prohibits the purchase and possession of dinitrogen monoxide – the chemical name for nitrous oxide – by young people. This substance is now classified under the New Psychoactive Substances Act (NpSG), a law that also covers so-called “knockout drops.”

Risks Associated with Nitrous Oxide Use

Nitrous oxide is often used by some teenagers and young adults at parties to induce short-term euphoric states. However, its use carries significant health risks, including potential poisoning and long-term damage to the user’s health.

Authorities are actively working to curb the availability of such substances, particularly among vulnerable populations like minors, to prevent adverse health outcomes and ensure public safety.
