New Corvette “Lübeck” Christened at Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg

Hamburg, April 29 – A new corvette for the German Navy, named “Lübeck”, was christened on Wednesday at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The 89-meter-long vessel is intended primarily for reconnaissance missions in the Baltic Sea. While no one was harmed during the christening ceremony, the event marks a significant step in strengthening Germany’s maritime security capabilities.

The “Lübeck”: A New Addition to the K130 Class

The “Lübeck” is one of five new K130 class corvettes being built for the German Navy. These vessels are specifically designed for operations in shallow waters and coastal regions. Their primary tasks include monitoring sea areas and engaging targets at sea and on land. The new corvette will have a crew of 60 soldiers. Its homeport will be Rostock.

A Name with a Rich Naval Tradition

The name “Lübeck” carries a long tradition within the German Navy. As early as 1848, a steam corvette named after the Hanseatic city was acquired by the Frankfurt National Assembly for the German Imperial Fleet. More recently, a frigate stationed in Wilhelmshaven bore this name, serving for 32 years before being decommissioned on December 15, 2022.

Extensive Testing Before Handover

The construction costs for the “Lübeck” amounted to approximately 400 million Euros. Axel Deertz, Deputy Inspector of the Navy, emphasized that the christening is a statement that “Germany remains committed to maritime security in the Baltic Sea region.” Following the christening, the corvette will undergo various tests before its official handover. This process is expected to take at least another year.

Blohm + Voss to Build Surface Drones in Hamburg

The development of these vessels is anticipated to create new jobs in Hamburg. Critics, however, have raised concerns that the involvement of the defense industry is not being sufficiently questioned. The CEO of Rheinmetall has indicated that Blohm + Voss is seeking hundreds of new employees. The Hamburg shipyard, Blohm + Voss, is benefiting from contracts for the Navy, including frigates and unmanned fast boats, thereby creating new employment opportunities.

Hamburg Journal Reports on the Event

The christening of the corvette “Lübeck” was covered by NDR 90.3’s Hamburg Journal on April 29, 2026, at 7:30 PM.
