Munich, April 28 – A garbage truck was engulfed in flames on Tuesday morning in the Oberföhring/Unterföhring area, on the periphery of the Bavarian capital. A fortunate coincidence, involving a firefighter who happened to be passing by, is believed to have prevented a more severe incident.
Fire Erupts on M3 On-Ramp
The incident occurred around 6:10 AM at the on-ramp from Effnerstraße to the M3 motorway. “In the early morning hours of Tuesday, a truck fire occurred at the on-ramp from Effnerstraße to the M3. Emergency services from the Munich Fire Department and the Unterföhring Volunteer Fire Department were on site,” stated the Munich Fire Department in an incident report on Facebook.
Firefighter’s Timely Discovery
The quick response was largely due to a remarkable coincidence: a Munich Fire Department employee was on his way to his station when he noticed the flames. “Due to the immediate proximity to Fire Station 8, he immediately went there and informed his colleagues from the control center. Simultaneously, the Integrated Control Center was notified,” the fire department further reported.
Large Smoke Plume and Rapid Firefighting Efforts
Firefighters were dispatched immediately and observed a large, distinct plume of smoke on their approach to the scene. Upon arrival, the garbage truck was fully ablaze, with the fire having spread to the driver’s cab. Emergency crews immediately initiated firefighting operations, initially using a C-hose. To achieve rapid extinguishing, a water-foam mixture was deployed. Shortly thereafter, units from the Unterföhring Volunteer Fire Department arrived and provided support. With a total of two hoses, the fire was brought under control within minutes.
Road Closure and Undetermined Cause
During the extinguishing efforts, the M3 on-ramp was temporarily closed to traffic. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. The fire department could not provide an estimate of the material damage. The driver of the garbage truck had managed to evacuate to safety in time and was unharmed.
The incident highlights the importance of rapid response and the critical role of vigilant citizens, even off-duty, in emergency situations. Further investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to be carried out.
