Berlin, May 1 – A new direct train connection between Prague and Copenhagen, with significant stops in Germany, commenced operations today. This initiative, a collaboration between Deutsche Bahn, Danish State Railways (DSB), and Czech Railways (ČD), aims to enhance cross-border rail travel.
New Route and Schedule Details
The new service allows passengers to travel directly from Prague, through Berlin, to Copenhagen without transfers. Key German stops include Dresden and Hamburg. The first train, RJ 384, departed Prague at 6:31 AM and is scheduled to arrive in Copenhagen at 7:38 PM. It made scheduled stops in Dresden at 8:50 AM and Berlin Central Station at 10:29 AM. The return journey from Copenhagen to Prague begins at 8:22 AM.
Initially, one train will operate daily in each direction, with a scheduled travel time of approximately 13 hours. This extended travel time is due to ongoing general renovations between Hamburg and Berlin, which necessitate a diversion via Stendal and Uelzen. Additionally, trains will have an 80-minute layover in Hamburg-Altona.
Future Enhancements and European Cooperation
From June 14, following the completion of the general renovation work, the diversions and extended layover will be eliminated. A second train per day in each direction will also be added, as confirmed by a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson. This new direct connection is one of ten pilot projects supported by the European Commission to promote cross-border rail connections.
The service utilizes ČD’s ComfortJet trains, which boast a top speed of 230 kilometers per hour. These modern trains offer 555 seats, including 99 in first class, and provide space for twelve bicycles, catering to a diverse range of travelers.
