Carnival of Cultures Celebrates 30th Anniversary in Berlin

Berlin, May 4 – The Carnival of Cultures is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with a four-day festival scheduled from May 22 to 25, 2026. The event, which aims to promote diversity and peaceful coexistence, will offer free admission to all attendees.

Street Festival and Parade Highlights

The street festival at Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg will open on Friday, May 22, at 5:00 PM. On Saturday and Sunday, it will run from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and on Whit Monday, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Visitors can expect a diverse array of stage performances, culinary delights, and handicrafts from numerous countries.

The highlight of the festivities is the street parade on Whit Sunday, May 24, starting at 1:30 PM. The procession will lead from the intersection of Frankfurter Allee/Proskauer Straße, along Karl-Marx-Allee, to Berolina Straße in Friedrichshain. Over 60 groups will showcase dance, music, and costumes from around the world. Due to construction work on Gneisenaustraße, the parade has been held in Friedrichshain since 2025, rather than its traditional Kreuzberg route.

Art Exhibition and Call for Donations

In conjunction with the festival, the Bethanien Art Quarter at Mariannenplatz 2 will host the exhibition “Of Seeing and Being Seen” from May 13 to May 26. The exhibition will feature 14 artistic perspectives on the history of the festival, open Monday to Friday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

For the first time, the organizer, Piranha Arts AG, is appealing for donations. The funding from the Berlin Senate is no longer sufficient to cover increased requirements. The goal is to raise 100,000 Euros to cover costs such as expanded security teams, additional sanitary facilities, and cleaning along the parade route.

Origins and Significance

The Carnival of Cultures originated in 1996. It was established as a response to racism and numerous attacks, aiming to send a clear message about diversity and peaceful coexistence. The idea was born in the Werkstatt der Kulturen, a meeting place founded in Neukölln in 1993 for the approximately 500,000 Berlin residents with roots in over 180 nations at the time.
