EU Approves €76 Million for QuantumDiamonds to Boost Semiconductor Production
Munich, June 24 – The European Commission has given its blessing to a significant investment in QuantumDiamonds GmbH, a Munich-based start-up, by approving a direct grant of 76 million euros. This substantial funding is earmarked for the construction of a new production facility in Munich dedicated to advanced semiconductor testing devices. The move is a strategic effort to strengthen Europe’s position and autonomy within the global semiconductor value chain.
Microchips are integral components in virtually all modern electronic devices, from smartphones and cars to computers. As these chips become increasingly complex, so does the challenge of testing them effectively. QuantumDiamonds aims to address this challenge with its innovative quantum sensor-based testing methods.
QuantumDiamonds to Build First EU Production Site for Quantum Sensor-Based Testing
The EU Commission’s standard procedure involves scrutinizing state aid proposals from member states to ensure they do not distort European competition. In this instance, no objections were raised, highlighting the strategic importance of the project. The Commission stated that the funding would support the development and manufacturing of advanced measurement and testing systems for the semiconductor industry, utilizing novel quantum sensors.
These cutting-edge sensors are designed to enable high-resolution, three-dimensional testing of modern chips. QuantumDiamonds is set to establish the first production site in the EU for these innovative semiconductor measurement and testing systems based on quantum sensor technology.
Strengthening Europe’s Semiconductor Value Chain
In December, QuantumDiamonds announced an investment plan totaling 152 million euros for the development of this production facility. At that time, it was anticipated that the company would also receive public funding from the German federal government and the Bavarian state government under the European Chips Act.
As part of the agreement, QuantumDiamonds has committed to several key provisions. These include prioritizing orders during supply bottlenecks, making a portion of the facility available to start-ups and academic laboratories in the early stages, and sharing any project-related profits that exceed current expectations with Germany. These commitments are expected to have a positive impact on the EU’s semiconductor value chain by ensuring supply security and fostering workforce qualification.
The EU Commission emphasized that this measure will have “far-reaching positive effects on the European semiconductor ecosystem and contributes to strengthening Europe’s security of supply.” The Commission further noted that the company would not undertake this investment in Europe without public support, and the amount of aid is determined by a demonstrated funding gap.
EU Aims to Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing
Microelectronics is recognized as a key technology. The EU has set an ambitious goal to increase its share of global semiconductor manufacturing to 20 percent by 2030, up from its current share of approximately 10 percent, according to the EU Commission. Microchips, primarily made from semiconductor materials like silicon, are essential for almost all modern devices.
Earlier this month, the EU Commission introduced proposals aimed at strengthening European production. These include encouraging member states to prioritize European-made microchips in public procurement, announcing faster approval procedures, promoting deeper cooperation, and introducing a new ‘Excellence Label’ for Europe’s semiconductor regions to attract investors.
