Berlin, June 25 – Two students at a school in Berlin-Weissensee are alleged to have disseminated AI-generated nude images of their female classmates. The Berlin Senate Department for Education stated, “We take cases of sexualized violence in schools very seriously.” The school administration acted immediately upon learning of the incidents, informing the school community, implementing disciplinary measures, and involving the police. The school supervisory authority has also provided support.

Police Investigate Deepfake Allegations

“There are reports of the creation of so-called deepfakes,” a spokesperson for the Berlin police told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The State Criminal Police Office’s department for sexual offenses against minors has taken over the investigation. Possible charges include the possession, procurement, creation, or distribution of child pornography under Section 184c of the German Criminal Code. Due to victim protection considerations, the police are not providing further details.

Students Suspended, Legal Reforms Discussed

According to reports, the two students who created the deepfakes were immediately suspended from classes. This incident follows Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch’s presentation of a major study on violence and bullying in Berlin schools, which concluded that violence and conflict are now commonplace. At the federal level, there have been ongoing discussions about closing legal loopholes that hinder the prosecution of pornographic deepfakes and surreptitious nude recordings. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) presented a draft law on this matter in April.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Efforts

The incident highlights the growing concerns surrounding the misuse of artificial intelligence and its potential for harm, particularly among minors. The swift response from school authorities and law enforcement underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are being treated. Efforts to strengthen legal frameworks against deepfakes and similar digital abuses are gaining momentum, reflecting a societal need to adapt to new forms of digital crime. The investigation continues, with authorities committed to ensuring justice for the victims and preventing similar incidents in the future.
