Heatwave Drives Hamburg’s Water Consumption to Annual High
Hamburg, June 28, 2026 – The ongoing heatwave has significantly increased drinking water consumption in Hamburg, reaching its annual peak on Wednesday. According to a spokesperson for Hamburg Wasser, 412.2 million liters of water were consumed, marking the highest daily figure for the year.
Further Peaks Expected as Temperatures Soar
With temperatures anticipated to climb up to 37 degrees Celsius in the coming days, Hamburg Wasser expects further spikes in water demand. Daily consumption exceeding 400 million liters is classified as a peak demand. “During heatwaves, consumption often rises very quickly, putting our facilities under intense pressure at times. Therefore, it is crucial that we all use water consciously to help ensure a reliable supply, even during peak periods,” stated Martin Gerhardt, Technical Managing Director at Hamburg Wasser. Despite the current situation, a permanent water shortage is not expected in Northern Germany, according to prevailing expert assessments.
Factors Influencing Peak Demand
Hamburg Wasser highlights that the timing of hot temperatures significantly influences peak demand. “In June, such weather almost guarantees high consumption because summer holidays have not yet begun anywhere. In July or August, such peaks may not necessarily occur,” the utility explained. Differences in consumption are also often observed on weekends, as many Hamburg residents leave the city, and the demand from commuters decreases.
Hamburg Residents Among the Most Frugal Water Users in Germany
The Hamburg Wasser supply area serves 2.2 million residents, with 17 interconnected waterworks ensuring the city’s water supply. Hamburg residents are considered relatively frugal in their water consumption, with a per capita daily usage of approximately 111 liters. This figure is notably below the national average of 128 liters per day.
Water Utilities in Schleswig-Holstein Call for Conservation
The high water consumption is not exclusive to Hamburg. Water utilities in Schleswig-Holstein are also reporting high demand, with Kiel’s municipal utility recording a record high. Pumps are reaching their limits at certain times, prompting calls for water conservation across the region.
Heatwave Subsides After Record Highs
After a weekend that saw record temperatures in Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein, cooler weather is expected at the beginning of the week, offering some relief from the intense heat.
