Stavenhagenhaus: Hamburg Cultural Center Undergoes Renovation
Hamburg, July 6 – The Stavenhagenhaus cultural center in Groß Borstel, a landmark building in Hamburg, is undergoing a comprehensive modernization. The renovation project, which aims to make the historic building fully accessible, is estimated to cost nearly two million euros and is expected to be completed in just over a year.
Focus on Accessibility and Safety
A key aspect of the renovation is the installation of a new elevator, which will provide barrier-free access to both the upper and attic floors. Additionally, accessible toilet facilities are planned for both floors. Fire safety improvements include the installation of two additional staircases and larger windows.
The Stavenhagenhaus is a central hub for cultural activities in Groß Borstel, hosting concerts, readings, exhibitions, lectures, and district festivals. However, the building has also been the subject of controversy in the past. Approximately two years ago, a café in the building was forced to close shortly after opening due to a neighborhood lawsuit.
New Bistro Opens Amidst Renovations
Despite past challenges, the operation of a cultural café has since been legally secured by the district office. A new operator, Bistro Köpke, opened last week and plans to continue offering food and beverages throughout the construction period, though occasional closures may occur.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The renovation of the Stavenhagenhaus is part of a broader effort to enhance public spaces in Hamburg. Following the demolition of garages in the city center last year, concrete plans for redesigning these open areas are now in motion.
The project underscores Hamburg’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while ensuring modern accessibility and safety standards for its residents and visitors.
