Metronom to Resume Cuxhaven-Hamburg Route by End of 2027
Hamburg, July 7, 2026 – The Metronom railway company is set to resume operations on the RE5 route between Cuxhaven and Hamburg from the end of 2027. This decision follows a successful Europe-wide tender process, with the contract awarded by the Lower Saxony State Public Transport Company and the City of Hamburg.
The agreement marks a return for Metronom, which previously operated this route from 2007 to 2018. The new contract is for a period of ten years, with an option for extension, providing long-term stability for the service.
No Changes Expected for Passengers and Schedules
For passengers, the transition is expected to be seamless. The familiar double-decker trains will remain in service, and the current timetable will be maintained. This ensures continuity and minimal disruption for commuters and travelers using the popular route.
A spokesperson for Metronom stated, “We are pleased to once again operate this important route. Our focus remains on providing reliable and comfortable service to our passengers.”
Job Security for Employees
The operator change also brings positive news for the employees currently working on the RE5 line. The new contract ensures that staff can be transferred to Metronom, providing job security during the transition period.
Currently, the route is operated by ‘start’, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. The changeover at the end of 2027 will see Metronom fully take over the services.
Recent Challenges for Metronom Services
The announcement comes amidst recent challenges for Metronom’s services on other routes. In May 2026, the company announced reduced services between Bremen and Hamburg, with the RB41 route from Hamburg only extending to Scheeßel. The RE4 service was also affected, making more stops and consequently taking longer.
Furthermore, in November 2025, Metronom faced train shortages, leading to individual service cancellations on two routes for five weeks between Bremen and Hamburg. These issues highlight the operational complexities faced by railway operators.
Long-Term Commitment to Regional Transport
Despite recent operational hurdles, the new ten-year contract for the Cuxhaven-Hamburg route signifies a strong long-term commitment from Metronom to regional public transport. The company’s return to this key route aims to strengthen the transportation network in the region.
The RE5 line is a vital connection for communities between Cuxhaven and Hamburg, serving a significant number of daily commuters and travelers. The continued use of double-decker trains underscores the commitment to maintaining capacity and comfort for passengers.
Local authorities expressed confidence in Metronom’s ability to deliver a high-quality service. “This decision ensures a stable and efficient rail connection for the coming decade,” commented a representative from the Lower Saxony State Public Transport Company.
The detailed planning for the transition will commence immediately, with both Metronom and the current operator working to ensure a smooth handover of services by the end of 2027.
