Hamburg, July 19 – Despite a recent decline in the number of asylum seekers arriving in Hamburg, the city’s housing facilities remain severely strained, with projections indicating a further exacerbation of the shortage. This situation is compounded by the planned closure of hundreds of accommodation places by the end of the year.
Declining Arrivals, Increasing Pressure on Housing
According to the latest refugee situation report from the Office for Migration, 380 asylum seekers arrived in Hamburg in June, a decrease from 414 in May. However, this reduction has not alleviated the pressure on the city’s housing infrastructure. As of the end of May this year, 1,292 accommodation places had already been eliminated, with hundreds more slated for closure by year-end.
Focus on Cost-Cutting and Long-Term Solutions
The Senate plans to close expensive accommodations, particularly hotel rooms rented by the city, in favor of more permanent housing solutions. However, these municipal facilities are often overcrowded, housing not only asylum seekers but also other homeless individuals. The waiting list for these accommodations is growing, with over 2,200 people currently awaiting placement.
Criticism from The Left Party
The Left Party in the Hamburg Parliament has consistently criticized the ongoing reduction of accommodation places, warning that it will intensify the housing crisis. They argue that the red-green Senate’s policies are detrimental to integration efforts and harm those desperately in need of shelter.
Last year, the city of Hamburg spent approximately 164 million Euros on housing asylum seekers in hotels, highlighting the financial burden associated with temporary solutions.
The Persistent Challenge: Full Refugee Homes Despite Fewer Arrivals
Even with fewer new arrivals, Hamburg’s refugee homes remain at capacity, and there is no immediate prospect of relief. The strained situation is attributed to expiring rental contracts and the closure or renovation of existing facilities. Many hotel accommodations, previously rented by the city for refugees, are among those being phased out, drawing sharp criticism from the Left Party faction.
Ongoing Construction and Closures
While Hamburg is building new refugee accommodations, it is simultaneously closing existing facilities, creating a complex and challenging situation for housing vulnerable populations. The city’s efforts to transition to more sustainable and cost-effective housing options are clashing with the immediate need to provide shelter for a growing number of people.
