Munich, August 2 – Antonio Sorce, the owner of the popular Italian restaurant ‘Da Antonio’ in the Basler Straße in Fürstenried, expressed his distress over the uncertain future of his establishment. Sorce has known for over two years that he would have to vacate his long-standing location, but the exact timing remains unclear.
Restaurant to be Demolished for New Development
The area around the intersection of Basler Straße and Züricher Straße is slated for a significant redevelopment project. Plans include the construction of five eight-story apartment buildings with approximately 175 barrier-free residential units, two above-ground parking garages, and a new daycare center. The current location of ‘Da Antonio,’ which includes a bowling alley, is scheduled for demolition to accommodate the new childcare facility.
Sorce opened his restaurant in Basler Straße in 2007. The ‘Da Antonio’ has since become a vital community hub in the district. A spokesperson for Münchner Wohnen, the municipal housing association, acknowledged the restaurant’s importance in April 2024, stating their commitment to helping Sorce find a new location.
Ongoing Discussions and Search for a New Site
Münchner Wohnen confirmed that they are still in contact with Sorce. “We were on-site just this Monday (July 27, 2026, editor’s note),” a spokesperson stated. “We have supported the search for a successor location, but so far nothing has materialized.” The planned construction measures are expected to commence in 2029.
The district committee of Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln emphasized that the new buildings would create “urgently needed, affordable housing” in Fürstenried. However, they also noted that the loss of ‘Da Antonio’ would represent a “considerable loss for the neighborhood,” as it would lose its only restaurant with evening opening hours and attractive offerings for residents.
Lease Agreement and Customer Hopes
Sorce confirmed that he has not yet received a notice of termination, and his current lease agreement runs until the end of 2027. “My guests just hope that I stay,” he said, highlighting the strong community attachment to his restaurant. Many residents have expressed that there are no comparable dining options in the area.
Possibility of Integration into New Development
Intriguingly, the Münchner Wohnen spokesperson did not rule out the possibility of ‘Da Antonio’ becoming part of the new development. “We are aware that there is hardly any similar gastronomy with outdoor seating in the district. Therefore, we are currently examining whether and where a suitable commercial unit for such a concept would be possible in the new buildings,” the spokesperson added.
The future of ‘Da Antonio’ remains a topic of concern for both its owner and the Fürstenried community, as residents eagerly await a resolution that will allow their beloved neighborhood restaurant to continue serving them.
