Hamburg, August 17 – The Studentenwerk Hamburg has urgently requested increased financial support from the City of Hamburg. Without it, there is a risk that 2,000 new student housing units, planned for construction over the next three years, will not be completed on schedule. The science authority, however, countered that it has already boosted its funding.
Construction of 2,000 New Housing Units at Risk
The Studentenwerk Hamburg aims to construct 2,000 additional student housing units within the next three years. According to its annual report, this ambitious goal can only be achieved with a “significantly expanded public subsidy” in light of rising construction costs.
Hamburg’s Funding Below National Average
The Studentenwerk criticized Hamburg for providing a considerably smaller subsidy compared to other federal states. The city contributed only 4.6 percent of the ongoing operating costs, which is half the national average. This places Hamburg second to last nationwide, according to the German Studentenwerk.
Warning of a Structural Deficit
Currently, the Hamburg Studentenwerk faces a 1.7 million Euro deficit in its ongoing operations for the current year. This gap is intended to be covered by reserves. However, the Studentenwerk warns of a structural deficit, despite having already increased rents, semester contributions, and cafeteria prices.
Science Authority Rejects Criticism
The science authority responded by stating that it has already provided the Studentenwerk with approximately six million Euros in additional funding since 2023. Furthermore, it plans to increase subsidies for cafeteria meals starting in 2027.
CDU Criticizes Slow Progress on Student Housing
The Senate intends to build 3,000 additional housing units for students and apprentices by 2030. The CDU considers this pace too slow and demands an acceleration of planning. This issue was discussed on NDR 90.3 as part of “NDR 90.3 Aktuell” on August 17, 2026, at 06:00 AM.
