Nationwide Alcohol Ban at German Train Stations Expands to Berlin
Berlin, August 30, 2026 – Deutsche Bahn is set to implement its nationwide alcohol consumption ban at four additional stations starting Tuesday, August 30, 2026. This expansion includes major hubs such as Berlin Central Station and Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, alongside Kiel and Braunschweig. The state-owned railway company aims to improve safety for passengers and employees, as well as enhance cleanliness across its stations.
The initiative, which has been gradually rolled out across Germany, is part of a broader strategy to create a more secure and pleasant environment for travelers. The ban will eventually extend to all 5,400 train stations nationwide by October 15, 2026.
New Stations Under the Ban
As of Tuesday, the alcohol consumption ban will be newly enforced at:
- Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
- Berlin-Gesundbrunnen Station
- Kiel Central Station
- Braunschweig Central Station
These additions bring the total number of stations with such a ban to over 30, building on successful implementations in cities like Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich.
Positive Outcomes from Pilot Projects
Deutsche Bahn reports highly positive experiences from its initial pilot projects. According to the company, the ban has led to a significant reduction in litter and has contributed to a decrease in alcohol-related violent crime, conflicts, and altercations. A spokesperson noted, “In the model projects, it was shown that significantly less waste accumulates and the ban also helps to reduce violent crime, conflicts, and disputes under the influence of alcohol, as for example at Hamburg Central Station.” This has resulted in an improved sense of security for travelers and reduced cleaning efforts.
Scope and Enforcement of the Ban
The consumption ban will apply throughout the entire station area, including platforms. In some municipalities, this also extends to forecourts owned by Deutsche Bahn. Exceptions may apply where station buildings are not owned by DB. Importantly, alcohol can still be purchased and consumed within gastronomic establishments located inside the stations. Passengers are also permitted to carry alcohol, provided it is not consumed within the designated ban areas.
Violations of the ban will initially result in a spatial exclusion from the station premises. Repeated offenses may lead to a permanent ban from the station.
Enforcement Challenges and Strategy
The nationwide enforcement of such a ban presents significant logistical challenges. While DB Security is responsible for implementation, a comprehensive, blanket control across all 5,400 stations would require a massive increase in personnel, which is not currently planned. The Federal Police, responsible for security at train stations, also faces staffing shortages and will primarily be called upon in cases of conflict.
However, Deutsche Bahn emphasizes that strict, continuous enforcement may not be the sole measure of success. The deterrent effect of the ban itself is considered crucial. The company remains satisfied with the developments at stations where the ban is already in place, even without constant, strict controls.
Handling Major Events: Football Matches
A particular challenge arises during major events, such as Bundesliga football match days, when tens of thousands of fans travel by train, often consuming alcohol. Deutsche Bahn has stated that it will approach enforcement during such events with a measured strategy.
“To enforce the alcohol consumption ban at stations, we proceed with discretion during major events such as football matches,” DB announced. “Police and DB Security will be visibly present at the station and de-escalate if necessary.”
Future of Alcohol Consumption on Trains
Despite the station ban, Deutsche Bahn has no current plans to prohibit alcohol consumption on long-distance trains. Alcoholic beverages will continue to be sold in onboard bistros, and passengers may consume their own alcohol “as long as this occurs within a reasonable framework and does not disturb fellow travelers.” The emphasis remains on mutual consideration.
In regional transport, regulations vary. Some transport associations, including those in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, and Nuremberg, already prohibit alcohol consumption on regional trains. Passengers who pose a risk to others or to operational safety and order can be removed from the train. Several private railway companies have also implemented alcohol consumption bans on their trains for many years.
