Berlin, September 1 – The city of Berlin is facing an extortion attempt following a cyberattack on its administrative data network. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) confirmed after a special Senate meeting at the Red City Hall that the city would not give in to the hackers’ demands.

Cyberattack and Extortion Attempt on Berlin’s Administration

The hacker attack, which became public on August 14, affected the administrative data network of Berlin. This led to the temporary disconnection of the two affected Senate administrations for Transport and for Building and Housing from the state network. Mayor Wegner declared that Berlin has become the victim of a serious crime. He did not specify the nature of the extortion demands but made it clear that the Senate would not negotiate with the cybercriminals.

Investigation Underway

The Berlin State Criminal Police Office and the public prosecutor’s office have launched an investigation into the incident. The focus is on identifying the perpetrators and understanding the full extent of the data breach and the subsequent extortion attempt.

City’s Stance on Cybercrime

Wegner’s firm stance underscores the city’s commitment to not yielding to criminal pressure. This decision aligns with a broader policy of resisting cyber extortion, aiming to deter future attacks and protect public resources. The incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime targeting public institutions and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

Impact on Public Services

While the affected administrations were temporarily disconnected, efforts are underway to restore full functionality securely. The city aims to minimize disruption to public services while ensuring the integrity and safety of its data infrastructure.

This event follows a series of cyber incidents targeting public and private entities globally, emphasizing the critical need for advanced cybersecurity strategies and international cooperation in combating cybercrime.
