Hamburg, September 20 – A historic pavilion in the Schulgarten of Hamburg’s Volkspark suffered significant damage overnight from copper thieves. The 1920s structure, which underwent extensive renovation nearly 20 years ago, was found with its copper roofing severely compromised. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Historic Pavilion Targeted by Copper Thieves
The pavilion, a protected monument located within the Schulgarten of the Hamburg Volkspark, was reportedly intact on Saturday evening, according to a local resident who regularly walks her dog through the area. However, on Sunday morning at 7:22 AM, she discovered the extensive damage to the copper roof and immediately alerted the police.
A police spokesperson confirmed to MOPO that “entire plates” of the copper roofing had been removed. The full extent of the damage and the monetary value of the stolen copper have not yet been determined. This incident highlights a recurring problem in the region, where copper thieves frequently target valuable materials under the cover of night.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the theft. It remains unclear why the thieves did not remove the entire copper roof and who is responsible for the act.
