A1 Motorway in Hamburg to Close Again This Weekend for Süderelbe Bridge Construction
Hamburg, July 2 – The A1 motorway in Hamburg will once again be closed for construction work on the Süderelbe Bridge. This time, the closure will affect the lanes in the direction of Bremen, starting from Friday, July 2, at 10 PM, until Monday, July 5, at 5 AM. The affected section is between the Hamburg-Stillhorn and Hamburg-Harburg junctions.
According to Autobahn GmbH, significant traffic jams and delays are expected, and motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area if possible.
Diversion Routes and Traffic Management
During the closure, traffic will be diverted at the A1 Hamburg-Stillhorn junction. The designated diversion route, U 76, will guide drivers via Kornweide, Bundesstraße 75 (B75), and Fünfhausener Landweg to the A1 Harburg junction.
For long-distance traffic heading towards Bremen from the north, a broader diversion is recommended. Drivers should take the A20 motorway from the Lübeck interchange to Bad Segeberg, then continue on the B206 to Bad Bramstedt, and finally join the A7 motorway towards Hanover/Bremen.
Background: Süderelbe Bridge Construction
These closures are part of the ongoing construction work for the replacement of the Süderelbe Bridge. The dilapidated Elbe bridges on the A1 are being replaced with new structures. A similar closure in the opposite direction two weeks ago led to several kilometers of traffic jams around the construction site.
To expedite the project, a fast-track procedure will be applied in Hamburg. Construction is scheduled to begin as early as next year, with the new Norderelbe Bridge expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
Additionally, Deutsche Bahn is planning to rebuild the railway bridges over the Süderelbe. These works are slated to commence in 2028, replacing the old structure built in the 1970s.
Impact on Local and Regional Traffic
The closures underscore the extensive infrastructure projects underway in Hamburg to modernize its critical transport links. While these projects are essential for future mobility, they inevitably cause temporary disruptions for commuters and travelers.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about current traffic conditions and to allow for extra travel time. Information on traffic jams, construction sites, and hazard warnings for Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is regularly updated.
