Berlin’s Jewish Community Unveils Buddy Bear, Sending Strong Message Against Anti-Semitism
Berlin, June 23 – The Jewish Community in Berlin has introduced its own distinctive Buddy Bear, a two-meter-tall blue sculpture adorned with the names of all Jewish community institutions. The unveiling took place during the community’s summer reception in the courtyard of the Great Synagogue in Berlin-Mitte, serving as a powerful symbol of diversity and a clear message against anti-Semitism.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD), and Gideon Joffe, chairman of the Jewish Community. Together, they revealed the striking blue figure to hundreds of guests.
A Call for Safety and Inclusivity
Addressing the attendees, Governing Mayor Kai Wegner acknowledged the visible police presence outside the synagogue on Oranienburger Straße. He expressed a desire for a future where the Jewish community could celebrate without such security measures, stating, “I want to experience the Jewish community being able to celebrate without the need for police.” Wegner emphasized that it is the responsibility of politicians and society to ensure that “Jewish life in our city is safe.”
Wegner further stressed that even if individuals wearing a kippah fear entering certain parts of the city, it must be unequivocally clear that hatred, incitement, racism, and anti-Semitism do not belong to Berlin’s identity. He asserted that the Jewish community is a fundamental and vital part of the city’s fabric, unlike these negative phenomena.
“And even when it comes to Israel’s right to exist, there can be no two opinions. A clear stance is required here,” the Governing Mayor added, underlining the importance of unwavering support for Israel.
Resilience and Continued Growth
Gideon Joffe, chairman of the Jewish Community, reiterated the community’s resilience in the face of adversity. “Our answer to anti-Semitism is: We will not be intimidated. We will stay and continue. We will continue to build Jewish life. We will defend our freedom. And we believe in Germany,” Joffe declared, showcasing the community’s unwavering commitment to its presence and values in Berlin.
Distinguished Guests and Community Support
The summer reception drew a large and diverse crowd, including several hundred guests from various sectors such as business, churches, associations, and culture. Among the notable attendees were Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien, Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder, Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer (CDU), Berlin’s Senator for Education Katharina Günther-Wünsch, Senator for Finance Stefan Evers (both CDU), and the SPD’s leading candidate for Berlin, Steffen Krach. Their presence underscored the broad support for the Jewish community and its initiatives.
The Buddy Bear, a well-known symbol of Berlin, now serves as a tangible representation of the Jewish community’s enduring spirit and its active role in promoting a diverse and inclusive society, while firmly standing against all forms of discrimination and hatred.
