Berlin, June 29, 2026 – With the Berlin House of Representatives election scheduled for September 20, the city is still in need of approximately 1,500 polling station staff. Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) announced a further public appeal to assist the twelve boroughs in their search, aiming to reach a total of 38,500 election officials.
Incentives Boost Recruitment Efforts
The recruitment drive for polling station staff in Berlin has seen an increase in interest since the introduction of financial incentives. Previously, the work was purely voluntary, leading to low turnout figures. Now, election officials receive between 100 and 120 euros for their work on polling day. Additionally, staff members are compensated 40 euros for attending a training session and 25 euros for participating in an online training course. These measures aim to attract more individuals to support the democratic process.
Election Logistics and Costs
The upcoming election will feature 2,542 polling stations with ballot boxes and 1,572 postal voting centers. A significant change for this election is the use of a single ballot paper for both the first and second votes, replacing the previously used two separate papers.
The election carries substantial costs, with millions of euros earmarked for various expenses. Senator Spranger stated that 1.3 million euros have been allocated for printing polling cards and ballot papers, 3.5 million euros for postage, and 2.8 million euros for other material expenses and services. These figures do not include the costs for election officials, which are estimated to exceed 5 million euros.
Ensuring a Smooth Election Process
The need for additional polling staff highlights the critical role volunteers play in the smooth functioning of democratic elections. Their efforts ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to cast their votes securely and efficiently. The city’s renewed appeal and enhanced incentives are crucial steps in securing the necessary personnel for the September election.
The Berlin House of Representatives election is a key event for the city, and the successful recruitment of polling staff is paramount to its integrity and efficiency. The ongoing efforts to fill the remaining positions underscore the commitment to a well-organized electoral process.
