Kühtai, Austria – A snowboarder from Berlin has died in an avalanche in Austria. The 49-year-old man was with two other snowboarders on a slope in Kühtai, Tyrol, near a dam wall when a slab of snow broke loose. The Berliner was completely buried, while another winter sports enthusiast was partially buried with his head protruding from the snow. The third man remained unharmed.
Tragic Rescue Attempt
Rescue teams were only able to locate the buried snowboarder after two and a half hours. Unfortunately, all efforts to save him were in vain. According to the police, the snowboarders were not carrying any emergency equipment, which significantly hampered the rescue operation.
Rising Avalanche Fatalities in Europe
This winter has seen a significant increase in avalanche fatalities across Europe, marking the highest number in years. According to statistics from the European Avalanche Warnings Service (EAWS), at least 135 people have died in avalanches in the Alps and other European mountain ranges since the beginning of October.
Incident Details
The incident occurred as the three snowboarders were descending a slope. The sudden release of a slab avalanche caught them off guard. The lack of proper safety gear, such as avalanche transceivers, probes, and shovels, is believed to have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Police Investigation Underway
Local police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances leading to the avalanche and to assess any potential factors that could have been prevented. The identities of the other two snowboarders have not been released, but they are reported to be in shock following the traumatic event.
Safety Warnings for Winter Sports Enthusiasts
Authorities and mountain rescue services are reiterating urgent warnings to all winter sports enthusiasts to exercise extreme caution when venturing off-piste. They emphasize the critical importance of carrying full avalanche safety equipment and knowing how to use it. Additionally, checking avalanche forecasts and conditions before heading into the mountains is crucial for personal safety.
The tragic death of the Berlin snowboarder serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers of off-piste winter sports and the necessity of preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines.
