Berlin, May 27, 2026 – Berlin Energie und Wärme GmbH (BEW) will provide long-term district heating to Bayer AG’s Berlin-Wedding site starting in 2030. With an agreed thermal connection capacity of 20 MW, this represents the largest single new connection in the Berlin district heating system in approximately 25 years.
A Strong Signal for Berlin’s Heat Transition
Christian Feuerherd, Chairman of the Management Board of BEW, emphasized the significance of this agreement. “The fact that a key industrial site like Bayer is opting for our district heating in the long term is a strong vote of confidence – and a joint step for the heat transition in Berlin,” he stated. “We are selectively expanding our network and gradually converting our heat generation to climate-friendly technologies. Partnerships like this show that district heating is a scalable solution – from neighborhoods to industry – and it combines climate protection with reliable supply.”
Bayer’s Commitment to Decarbonization
Dr. Bettina von Streit, Site Manager for Bayer in Berlin, highlighted the strategic importance of this decision for the company. “The Berlin-Wedding site is a central research and production location for Bayer – for this, we need a secure, predictable heat supply. With the long-term decision for district heating, we are creating an important prerequisite to gradually decarbonize our heat supply and make the site resilient for the future. The cooperation with BEW is a central component in this.”
Bayer’s Significant Presence in Berlin
Bayer is one of the largest private employers in the capital, with nearly 5,000 employees. The Berlin-Wedding site spans 190,000 m2 and houses the global corporate headquarters of the Pharmaceuticals Division. Here, pharmaceutical products are manufactured, filled, and packaged. Additionally, functions such as research and development, particularly in the fields of oncology and radiology, as well as global control and marketing tasks of the Pharmaceuticals Division, are located at the site.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Capacity
Through this project and the district heating infrastructure built from Nordufer to Fennstraße, BEW is strengthening the supply infrastructure in the city center and creating additional capacity for other customers. Pipeline work for the connection of the Bayer site will take place in the coming months.
