Berlin, July 9, 2026 – On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in collaboration with Wall AG, officially inaugurated a new test bus shelter at the Spandauer Straße/Marienkirche bus stop. This pioneering project is designed to evaluate advanced solutions for public transport infrastructure, focusing on enhancing safety, digital passenger information, comfort, and sustainability within a real-world operational environment.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, Senator for Transport Ute Bonde, BVG CEO Henrik Falk, and representatives from Wall and JCDecaux. The initiative underscores Berlin’s commitment to modernizing its public transport system and improving the daily commute for its citizens.
Advanced Technology for Passenger Safety and Information
The innovative bus shelter is equipped with a suite of cutting-edge technologies. Key features include a direct voice connection to the BVG security control center, digital passenger information displays, USB charging facilities, a digital City-Light-Screen, and roof-mounted solar panels for partial power supply. Additionally, the shelter integrates an automated external defibrillator (AED) for medical emergencies, marking a significant step forward in public safety at transport hubs.
Project partners highlight that this is the first time such a comprehensive combination of features has been implemented in a single bus shelter in Germany. This integrated approach aims to provide a safer, more informed, and comfortable waiting experience for passengers.
Infobutton and Future Camera Support
Passengers can utilize an ‘Infobutton’ to establish direct contact with the security control center at any time. While a camera dummy is currently in use during the test phase, the BVG plans for future camera support in emergency situations. This prospective feature would enable security personnel to visually assess on-site situations when an emergency call is triggered, allowing for a quicker and more effective response. This measure is intended to further bolster passenger safety and provide peace of mind.
Passenger Involvement and Sustainability at the Forefront
The test bus shelter’s lighting system is partially powered by solar modules installed on its roof, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the design of the shelter has incorporated bird protection considerations, reflecting a holistic approach to urban development.
Over the coming months, the facility will undergo rigorous testing under regular operating conditions. Passengers are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences via a QR code displayed directly at the bus stop. The BVG intends to leverage this invaluable feedback and the insights gained from the operational tests to further refine and develop its future bus stop infrastructure.
