Customs Significantly Increases Controls at BER Airport
BER Airport, July 20, 2026 – Customs authorities at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) have considerably stepped up their control activities in the past year. A spokesperson for the main customs office in Potsdam reported that approximately 662,000 controls were carried out in 2025, a notable increase compared to the nearly 500,000 controls conducted in 2024. These intensified inspections resulted in the detection of around 9,300 violations in 2025. This figure marks an increase from the approximately 7,700 violations recorded in 2024, according to the spokesperson. The majority of these infractions involved the import of untaxed tobacco products.
Increased Passenger Traffic Leads to More Baggage Checks
The customs spokesperson attributed the rise in controls to the increased passenger volume at BER Airport. “As a result of the increased passenger numbers at BER, more baggage items were automatically inspected,” she explained. These controls are primarily based on intelligence assessments, with frequent tobacco seizures observed on flights originating from Turkey. Gold discoveries, on the other hand, were predominantly made on flights from Dubai.
“It is crucial that customs identifies risks, uncovers criminal offenses, and combats organized crime,” the spokesperson emphasized, highlighting the strategic importance of these intensified efforts.
