Munich, July 17 – A 37-year-old man has been taken into pre-trial detention in Munich on suspicion of espionage, following reports of a drone flying over a German defense company. The Munich public prosecutor’s office announced that the man is accused of gathering sensitive information on Wednesday evening, July 15, using a drone.

Arrest Made After Public Tip-Off

The arrest was made after police received tips from the public regarding drone activity over the premises of a defense company. The suspect was apprehended at the alleged scene of the crime and has since been placed in a Bavarian correctional facility.

According to a report from the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET), the Munich District Court issued an arrest warrant for the Moldovan national on Thursday. The charges are based on “suspicion of security-endangering imaging in conjunction with security-endangering intelligence activities.”

Allegations of Gathering State Defense Information

Initial investigations suggest that the drone was used to capture security-relevant images and video footage related to national defense matters. The intent, according to prosecutors, was to transmit this information to “a foreign entity or prohibited association.”

The General Public Prosecutor’s Office in Munich has stated that due to the ongoing investigation, no further details or information regarding the specifics of the case can be disclosed at this time. The identity of the defense company in question has also not been released.

Munich: A Hub for Defense Industry

Munich and its surrounding areas are home to numerous defense companies, including prominent names such as Airbus Defence and Space, KNDS Deutschland, Rohde and Schwarz, Helsing, Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, and Quantum Systems. These companies specialize in various areas, from communications technology and tanks to drones, engines, and defense electronics. The defense sector is frequently a target for foreign intelligence services.

The incident highlights the ongoing concerns about industrial espionage and the protection of sensitive information within the defense industry. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged espionage activities.
