BERLIN, Germany, October 7 – Germany is preparing to host a significant diplomatic event, the Z5+1 summit, which will gather the heads of state and government of Central Asian countries in Berlin. This announcement was made by German Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Petra Dachtler, in a speech published on the website of the German Embassy in Turkmenistan.
Germany’s Commitment to Central Asian Cooperation
Ambassador Dachtler emphasized Germany’s unwavering support for initiatives aimed at fostering cross-border trade, environmental protection, and border security within Central Asia. “We look forward to the upcoming summit at the level of heads of state and government in the Z5+1 format in Berlin,” Dachtler stated, expressing gratitude to the Turkmen leadership for their ongoing cooperation within this framework.
The Z5+1 format, according to the ambassador, holds substantial potential for deepening collaboration between Germany and the five Central Asian nations: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
Strengthening Economic Ties and Strategic Partnerships
The ambassador also highlighted the robust development of German-Turkmen economic relations. German companies are recognized for their strong reputation in medical technology and are actively involved in various sectors, including logistics, with planning work related to the port of Turkmenbashi, as well as the oil and gas and banking industries.
In July, a delegation of German business representatives visited Turkmenistan, engaging in high-level meetings with several deputy prime ministers. Ambassador Dachtler extended appreciation to the Turkmen government for their warm reception of the delegation.
Evolution of the Z5+1 Format
The Z5+1 format, initially established by Germany with the Central Asian countries, was elevated to a Strategic Regional Partnership in 2023. The inaugural summit between Central Asian leaders and the German Chancellor took place in Berlin in the same year. This was followed by a second summit held in Astana in September 2024. The cooperation framework encompasses crucial areas such as economy, energy and natural resources, regional cooperation and resilience, climate and the environment, and people-to-people contacts.
Previous Ministerial Meeting in Berlin
Prior to the upcoming summit, Berlin hosted a Z5+1 foreign ministers’ meeting on February 11, 2026. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with his counterparts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, alongside Turkmenistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov. The ministerial gathering was complemented by an economic forum that attracted nearly 30 German business representatives. Discussions at this forum concentrated on enhancing economic cooperation, energy, raw materials, security, and regional collaboration.
This series of high-level meetings underscores Germany’s strategic interest in strengthening its ties with Central Asia, fostering regional stability, and promoting economic development across the diverse and strategically important region.
