Görlitzer Railway Bridges to be Preserved as Pedestrian and Cycle Paths After Collaborative Agreement
Berlin, June 10 – The historic Görlitzer railway bridges, linking Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg to Treptow, are slated for preservation as dedicated pedestrian and cycle paths. This development follows a collaborative agreement between the Berlin Senate, the district of Treptow-Köpenick, and Deutsche Bahn, according to information obtained by the German Press Agency (dpa).
Initially, the surface of the bridges will be removed to allow experts to thoroughly assess their structural integrity. The primary objective is to ensure the proper safeguarding of these listed monuments and to maintain their function as vital pedestrian and cycle routes.
Bridges Faced Closure Due to Damage Concerns
The bridges are expected to be temporarily closed during the removal of the surfacing and the subsequent expert assessment. These heritage-protected structures, situated between Görlitzer Park and Treptow, are owned by Deutsche Bahn. The railway company had previously terminated its lease agreement with the district of Treptow-Köpenick, effective June 30, citing structural damage and intentions to close the bridges. Reports indicated that the bridges were showing signs of rust.
When questioned, Deutsche Bahn acknowledged ongoing constructive discussions but refrained from disclosing specific details. A DB spokesperson stated, “Deutsche Bahn, the Senate, and the district are engaged in discussions regarding the future of the Görlitzer bridges. These talks are productive, and various models are being considered. In this context, questions concerning the renovation of the bridges and the associated costs must also be clarified.”
Historical Significance and Current Use
The bridges originally served as railway overpasses for the Görlitz railway line, which has been completely out of service since 1986. Since 1994, the district of Treptow-Köpenick has leased the bridges, utilizing them as pedestrian and cycle paths, as confirmed by a response from the Senate Department for Transport to an inquiry from the SPD parliamentary group.
This decision to preserve the bridges underscores a commitment to maintaining and enhancing urban infrastructure for sustainable mobility.
