Hamburg Embraces Deep Geothermal Energy for Climate-Neutral Heat Supply
Hamburg, August 3, 2026 – The city of Hamburg is making significant strides towards a climate-neutral heat supply with the imminent launch of its first deep geothermal plant in the Wilhelmsburg district. Slated to begin operations later this year, the facility will provide district heating to approximately 6,000 households, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s renewable energy transition.
The red-green Hamburg Senate is committed to achieving a heat transition through renewable energies, with deep geothermal technology joining wind and solar as key pillars. The project, located on Schlengendeich in Wilhelmsburg, may appear unassuming from the outside, featuring a large, silvery-grey machine hall. However, within its walls lies the core of the system: a highly efficient heat pump unit supplied by a specialized company from Saxony.
Harnessing Heat from 1,300 Meters Below
The deep geothermal plant is designed to pump 48-degree Celsius thermal water from a depth of 1,300 meters. This water, extracted from a 130-meter-thick sandstone layer approximately 45 million years old – essentially the ancient seabed of the North Sea – will then pass through 30 heat exchangers. Here, its energy is extracted before the cooled water is reinjected into the earth. Project manager Frank Boehnke explains that multiple interconnected systems filter sand from the water both on its ascent and within the machine hall, ensuring operational efficiency and longevity.
Upon its full activation by the end of the year, the Wilhelmsburg geothermal plant will play a crucial role in Hamburg’s energy landscape. Geothermal energy offers a constant and continuous supply, making it an ideal candidate for providing the base load in heat supply, ensuring a reliable and round-the-clock source of warmth for residents.
A Key Component of Hamburg’s Heat Transition Strategy
This initiative aligns with the federal government’s mandate for all municipalities to present a plan for climate-neutral heat supply by mid-year. The Hamburg Senate’s focus on heat pumps, particularly through projects like the Wilhelmsburg plant, demonstrates a proactive approach to meeting these national targets and fostering a sustainable urban environment.
The project is part of a broader strategy by the Hamburg energy utilities, which, despite a recent decline in earnings to 19.3 million euros, remain committed to expanding renewable energies. The municipal company plans to invest 2.57 billion euros by 2030 to further develop its renewable energy infrastructure, underscoring a long-term vision for sustainable growth.
The introduction of deep geothermal energy in Wilhelmsburg is not an isolated effort. Hamburg is actively pursuing various renewable energy projects, including the near completion of district heating works in Osterstraße. Traffic and bus line 4 are expected to return to normal operations by the end of October in that area, indicating a city-wide push for modern, efficient energy solutions.
