Hamburg, September 28 – The Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has significantly revised its offer to acquire the Israeli shipping company ZIM. The updated proposal, valued at approximately 3.5 billion Euros, aims to alleviate concerns raised by the Israeli government regarding national security and the safeguarding of vital supply routes in times of crisis.
Revised Offer Addresses Israeli Government’s Reservations
Hapag-Lloyd’s initial bid for ZIM faced considerable opposition from the Israeli government, including the Ministry of Defense and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A primary concern centered on the potential for disruption to Israel’s supply chain, particularly given that major shareholders in Hapag-Lloyd include state funds from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. These countries, with their Muslim-majority populations, raised questions about the security of Israeli interests in a crisis scenario.
In response to these objections, Hapag-Lloyd had previously committed to a partial spin-off of ZIM, ensuring that a portion of the company would remain under Israeli ownership. The latest revisions further strengthen these assurances.
Key Enhancements in the New Offer:
- Dedicated Far East Service: The Israeli division of ZIM will receive its own dedicated liner service to the Far East.
- Global Container Fleet Access: ZIM will gain access to Hapag-Lloyd’s global container fleet.
- Increased Israeli Control: The Israeli state will be granted more control rights, particularly concerning the sale of shares to foreign entities.
Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, stated that these new proposals are designed to provide Israel with greater maritime independence and effectively address its national security interests.
Hapag-Lloyd Remains Committed to ZIM Acquisition
Despite the strong resistance encountered, Hapag-Lloyd continues to pursue the planned acquisition of ZIM. The integration of ZIM would expand Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet to approximately 400 ships, significantly bolstering its global presence and operational capabilities.
The ongoing negotiations highlight the complexities of international mergers and acquisitions, especially when geopolitical factors and national security interests are at play. The Hamburg-based company’s willingness to adapt its offer demonstrates its commitment to securing the deal while respecting the concerns of the Israeli government.
