Hamburg Unveils Major Healthcare Restructuring: Boberg Clinic Partially Relocates to UKE
Hamburg, Germany – September 6, 2026 – The future of healthcare in Hamburg is taking a new direction, as plans for the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Boberg Accident Hospital were unveiled at Hamburg City Hall on Tuesday. The restructuring involves a partial relocation of Boberg’s services to UKE, alongside significant new construction projects at both sites, promising enhanced medical care for the region.
For patients with severe injuries, a new facility will be constructed on the UKE campus in Eppendorf. Concurrently, the existing Boberg site in Bergedorf will see new buildings dedicated to rehabilitation and the care of paraplegics, ensuring specialized services remain accessible in the district.
“Positioning Both Clinics at the Medical Forefront”
Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) strongly advocated for the joint solution developed by UKE and BG Klinikum during the press conference. “Now there is a solution where we utilize the best synergies to position both clinics at the modern medical forefront,” Tschentscher stated, highlighting the collaborative effort to optimize healthcare provision in Hamburg.
New UKE Building for Severely Injured Patients
The BG Klinikum, which operates the Boberg Accident Hospital, will permanently treat severely injured patients at UKE. This will be facilitated by a new building constructed directly adjacent to UKE’s main facility. The BG Klinikum plans to invest a substantial 600 million Euros into this new development, underscoring the commitment to state-of-the-art trauma care.
Bergedorf Not to Be Neglected
Despite the relocation of some services, Mayor Tschentscher and Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD) assured the public that the Bergedorf location would not be neglected. Plans include the expansion of the central emergency room at Bethesda Hospital in Bergedorf, reinforcing local healthcare infrastructure.
New 350-Bed Facility in Bergedorf
Cornelia Schmidt-Hoffmann (SPD), head of the Bergedorf district office, expressed initial relief regarding the plans. According to Reinhard Nieper, Chairman of the Management Board of BG Kliniken, the existing Bergedorf site will feature a new building with 350 beds. This facility will house a new paraplegic center, rehabilitation facilities, and a sports medicine center, ensuring comprehensive care continues in the district.
Furthermore, a medical care center with an emergency outpatient clinic and an operating theater, as well as an outpatient pediatric traumatology center, will continue to provide essential services to the residents of Bergedorf. The emergency medical station, including ambulances and the rescue helicopter, will also remain at the Bergedorf location, maintaining critical emergency response capabilities.
Relief Among Bergedorf Officials
Schmidt-Hoffmann noted that after much speculation, there is now clarity. “The emergency doctor, rescue station, and helicopter will remain – and with them, not only important care areas but also highly qualified jobs will stay in Bergedorf,” she emphasized. The BG Clinic is currently Bergedorf’s largest employer and plays a crucial role in the district’s healthcare provision.
Mixed Reactions from Political Factions
Reactions among the political factions in Bergedorf City Hall have been varied. The Green Party welcomed the merger, while the Left Party expressed criticism. Stephan Jersch, a Bergedorf representative for the Left, argued that the Boberg clinic would be “hollowed out” in favor of UKE. The AfD described the move as a “wrong signal.” The Bergedorf CDU faction, which had long advocated for a new building in Boberg, at least welcomed the preservation of emergency care services.
Boberg Hospital: New Construction in Bergedorf Temporarily on Hold
It was also noted that the tendering process for new construction in Bergedorf had been canceled. The planning team cited changes in the framework conditions due to ongoing hospital reforms as the reason for this decision.
