Fire Door Malfunction Creates Bottleneck at Munich Central Station

The incident occurred at the transition point from the intermediate level to the platform forecourt, a heavily frequented area used by tens of thousands of passengers daily to access U-Bahn and S-Bahn services. A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn (DB) confirmed that the trigger for the incident was a defect in a fire alarm system located in the former Rewe area beneath the escalators leading to the intermediate level. This malfunction caused the fire protection door to activate and block the main passage. Only the small emergency door within the fire barrier remained accessible, through which passengers were forced to squeeze.
Ongoing Congestion Issues at Major Construction Site
This is not the first instance of dangerous crowd formation at the Munich Central Station, which is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction. The mega-construction project, including the rebuilding of the reception building, is expected to continue until the end of the next decade, severely restricting space and frequently leading to hazardous situations.
In late May, chaotic scenes unfolded at the Starnberger Flügelbahnhof, where hundreds of people were trapped between tracks and the construction site. Deutsche Bahn admitted at the time that its video surveillance security system had failed. Similar incidents occurred just weeks later at platform 19, where hundreds of travelers faced gridlock due to a police operation near Augsburg, preventing trains from departing towards West Bavaria and causing a significant buildup of passengers at the station.
Most recently, on Monday evening, congestion was reported on platform 11, used by travelers accessing the Holzkirchner Bahnhof for regional trains to East and Southeast Bavaria.
Emergency Response and Resolution
Unlike previous incidents caused by overcrowded trains, platforms, or emergency medical operations, Tuesday morning’s chaos in the intermediate level was solely attributed to the fire door malfunction. An eyewitness reported to the Süddeutsche Zeitung that she noticed the dense crowds from a distance while en route from a train to the S-Bahn and opted to take a detour via the southern exit at Bayerstraße to avoid potential danger.
Technicians from Deutsche Bahn worked urgently to identify and rectify the error. By late morning, the fire door was at least partially reopened, alleviating the immediate congestion. "Technicians are working at full speed to identify and eliminate the fault," the DB spokesperson stated. Additionally, station management staff directed travelers to alternative routes to the S-Bahn intermediate level. By midday, the situation had significantly eased.
The repeated incidents highlight ongoing safety concerns at one of Germany’s busiest railway hubs, prompting calls for improved crowd management and safety protocols, especially given the prolonged construction period. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent future occurrences of dangerous overcrowding.
