Munich to Introduce Yellow Bin for Packaging Waste City-Wide by 2027

Munich, May 7, 2026 – Residents of Munich will soon no longer need to transport their plastic and can waste to recycling islands. The city has announced a significant step forward in waste management with the city-wide introduction of the Yellow Bin system by 2027. This decision follows an agreement between the Munich Waste Management Department (AWM) and the dual systems, which finalized the details of the new collection scheme.

The Yellow Bin, designed for collecting packaging materials, will be emptied every two weeks. Planned container sizes include 120, 240, 770, and 1100 liters, catering to various household and building needs. Glass will remain the only recyclable material that residents will still need to take to designated recycling islands.

Successful Pilot Project Paves the Way

The decision to implement the Yellow Bin system across the city comes after a successful pilot project initiated in December 2022. The Munich City Council had approved a test phase in several districts, where residents trialed different waste collection methods, including the Yellow Bin, Yellow Bag, and a general recycling bin. The Yellow Bin emerged as the most effective and popular option among citizens.

Tender Process Underway

The full implementation of the new system will not be immediate. The tender process for private waste disposal companies is currently underway, with the contract expected to be awarded by the end of July 2026. Following this, final agreements with the selected company are scheduled for the summer and autumn of 2026.

The future Yellow Bin contractor will be responsible for comprehensively informing citizens about the new system. This includes details on bin placement, collection schedules, emptying procedures, and correct usage. A dedicated website and a free service hotline for inquiries and complaints will also be mandatory.

No Obligation and No Direct Costs for Residents

It has been confirmed that there will be no obligation for Munich residents to have a Yellow Bin on their property. Furthermore, there will be no direct costs for households, as the collection of sales packaging is funded by the dual systems. This cost is ultimately covered by product manufacturers through their contributions to these systems.

However, residents who decide to order a Yellow Bin at a later date may be required to pay for the delivery. Further details regarding the Yellow Bin system will be published during the final agreements with the private waste disposal company commissioned by the dual systems in summer/autumn 2026.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in Munich’s efforts to streamline waste management and make recycling more convenient for its residents, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
