BERLIN, April 18 – Approximately three months after a prolonged power outage in southwestern Berlin, a section of the previously affected area has once again experienced a power failure. According to the grid operator, the state-owned company Berlin Stromnetz, 1,314 households in the Nikolassee district were impacted.

Electricity Restored by Midnight, Cause Unknown

The power went out around 10:00 PM, a spokesperson for the grid operator confirmed. All affected households were expected to be reconnected to the power grid by midnight. The cause of the outage remained unknown at the time of the announcement.

Police have increased their patrols in the affected area. “Our officers are now more present there to be approachable and to strengthen the sense of security among residents,” they announced on the platform X. Residents can also contact the local police station.

Echoes of January’s Major Outage

This incident follows a major power outage in early January, which was the longest in post-war history for the city’s southwest. That outage, believed to have been caused by an arson attack on a cable bridge, left 100,000 people in 45,000 households and over 2,000 commercial businesses without electricity, and often heating, for several days.

During the January incident, which occurred amidst freezing temperatures and snow, thousands of Berliners sought refuge in hotels. The Senate received more than 2,800 applications for cost reimbursement and had pledged to cover these expenses. Payments are currently being processed through the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district.

Community Impact and Official Response

The repeated power outages highlight the vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure. While the current outage was significantly smaller in scale and duration compared to the January event, it still caused disruption for over a thousand households. The increased police presence aims to reassure residents and address any immediate security concerns arising from the darkness, as gas lanterns were the primary source of light on Kirchweg in Nikolassee.

The quick response by Berlin Stromnetz to restore power by midnight demonstrates efforts to minimize inconvenience. However, the lack of an immediate explanation for the cause of the outage may raise questions among residents and authorities regarding the stability of the local power supply.

Further investigations into the cause of this latest power failure are anticipated. The focus will likely be on identifying whether this was an isolated technical fault or if there are broader issues contributing to these recurring incidents in the Nikolassee area.
