Hamburg, July 4 – Approximately 20 individuals convened on Saturday afternoon in Hamburg-Wandsbek for a vigil honoring a cyclist who tragically lost his life in an accident. The man was hit by two cars at the end of June while attempting to cross the roadway. No one was injured, but the material losses were initially estimated at 4 million euros.
Vigil Organized by ADFC Hamburg
The vigil, held in Ölmühlenweg, was called for by the Hamburg state association of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC). The memorial event was organized by the Ghostbike working group of ADFC Hamburg. The 57-year-old cyclist was struck and run over by two cars on June 24 in Ölmühlenweg.
According to police, the man was riding on the bike path and intended to cross the road. He collided with a Polo driven by a 56-year-old woman and a van driven by a 64-year-old man. The cyclist succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene of the accident.
ADFC: “Senate’s Indifference is Scandalous”
ADFC board member Thomas Lütke used the accident as an opportunity to reiterate his criticism of the Hamburg Senate: “The protection of human lives must finally receive the highest priority in transport policy,” read a statement. The Senate’s indifference to the deaths on Hamburg’s streets is scandalous.
Roundtable with All Stakeholders Demanded
The cycling club has long called for safe bike paths, effective speed limits, and more speed controls in road traffic. “Hamburg urgently needs a Master Plan Vision Zero,” said Lütke. “We once again call on the Senate to convene a roundtable with all stakeholders to develop an immediate program for greater safety for road users, especially unprotected pedestrians and cyclists.”
In the first half of the year, three people, including an eleven-year-old child, have already died in cycling accidents. Last year, a total of eleven cyclists were killed.
