World Liberty Congress Establishes European Headquarters in Berlin
Berlin, Germany – Berlin has further cemented its role as a beacon of freedom and democracy with the official opening of the European headquarters of the World Liberty Congress in Berlin-Mitte. The organization, comprising more than 200 dissidents from approximately 50 autocratic countries, is recognized as the world’s largest democracy alliance.
Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner (CDU), together with the founders of the World Liberty Congress, Masih Alinejad from Iran and Leopoldo López from Venezuela, unveiled a plaque at the building, which also houses the Robert Havemann Society. This significant event highlights Berlin’s commitment to supporting individuals and movements dedicated to promoting freedom and democracy in autocratic states.
Berlin Freedom Week Returns in November
In conjunction with the headquarters’ opening, Mayor Wegner announced the return of ‘Berlin Freedom Week,’ an initiative that debuted last year and will again coincide with the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This year, Berlin Freedom Week is scheduled to take place from November 7-14.
The week-long event will feature several key gatherings, including a ‘Women Liberty Congress’ on November 7 and 8. Additionally, a ‘Freedom Conference’ is slated for November 10 at the Colosseum movie theater in Prenzlauer Berg, a location rich with historical significance due to its proximity to the Gethsemane Church, a vital meeting point for the GDR opposition. The inaugural Freedom Conference in 2025 brought together numerous persecuted opposition figures and former political prisoners from across the globe, all advocating for the fight for democracy and freedom.
Berlin: The City of Freedom
Mayor Wegner emphasized the profound importance of ‘freedom’ to him, stating, “Berlin is the City of Freedom, and we owe that above all to the courageous people who took to the streets in the fall of 1989 and brought down the Wall.” He underscored Berlin’s enduring role as a city of hope for all freedom-loving people worldwide.
Wegner reiterated Berlin’s unwavering support for the global struggle against tyranny and dictatorship. “At the end of the day, freedom prevails. In the end, the people triumph over tyranny and dictatorship.” He affirmed that Berlin will consistently stand in solidarity with those fighting for freedom and democracy.
The establishment of the World Liberty Congress’s European headquarters in Berlin further solidifies the city’s international standing as a hub for democratic discourse and a sanctuary for those championing human rights and political liberty.
