Berlin. What began as a routine traffic stop in Gropiusstadt on Friday night quickly escalated into a spectacular police chase through various districts of Berlin. The incident, which started around 10:30 PM in Friesenstraße, involved a 34-year-old driver who was eventually arrested with four open warrants and a stolen vehicle.
Dramatic Escape and Unusual Tactics
Police officers initially noticed a Mercedes driving without headlights. When they pulled the vehicle over and approached it, the driver suddenly accelerated and fled. The officers immediately initiated a pursuit, activating their blue lights and sirens.
The fugitive’s escape route led through several streets, including Gneisenaustraße, where he drove against oncoming traffic, and Urbanstraße, forcing several motorists to brake sharply and swerve to avoid collisions. At Hermannplatz, the driver even drove over the sidewalk of a café, causing pedestrians and guests to jump out of the way.
During the chase, the driver employed an unusual tactic to evade his pursuers: he sprayed a fire extinguisher from the moving car twice, attempting to obstruct the police’s view. Despite this, the officers continued their pursuit.
Chase Continues on Burst Tires
The chase continued onto Karl-Marx-Straße, Flughafenstraße, and Hermannstraße, eventually leading to the A113 motorway heading south. The driver weaved between lanes before exiting the motorway at Späthstraße. By this point, the Mercedes had two burst tires, sustained after hitting a traffic island. However, even this did not deter the fugitive, who continued to speed through Neukölln on bare rims, throwing objects out of the window and running red lights again.
The pursuit finally concluded in a rented parking lot on Goldammerstraße, where the Mercedes collided with a boulder, a curb, and a fence post. The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police shortly after.
Astonishing Discoveries After Arrest
Upon searching the vehicle and the arrested 34-year-old, police made several significant discoveries that shed light on the man’s desperate attempt to escape. Inside the car, officers found:
- A blank-firing weapon
- Several stolen license plate sets
- Two allegedly stolen e-scooters
- An angle grinder
- A crowbar
- A balaclava
Further investigation revealed that the Mercedes itself was stolen, and the attached license plates did not belong to the vehicle. The driver also did not possess a valid driver’s license. Most notably, the man had four outstanding arrest warrants, including for serious robbery and theft. Police also suspect he was driving under the influence of drugs.
The 34-year-old has been handed over to the justice system. The incident highlights the dangers faced by police officers during high-speed pursuits and the lengths to which criminals will go to avoid apprehension.
